RECALL of Pet Food Due to Pentobarbital Exposure

The dog food is reportedly contaminated with pentobarbital, a barbiturate often used to treat tension and anxiety in humans.

According to the FDA, the drug can cause "drowsiness, dizziness, excitement, loss of balance, or nausea, or in extreme cases, possibly death" when consumed by animals.

Evanger's, a pet food company has voluntarily recalled five lots of its Hunk of Beef dog food, the dog and cat food brand said in a statement on its website.

In a statement under the heading "Pug Family Update," Evanger's revealed that a customer's dog fell sick on New Year's Eve, spurring a month-long investigation. Pentobarbital was found in the animal's stomach lining and in one lot of Hunk of Beef.

As a precaution, Evanger's recalled five lots of the dog food with lot numbers that start with:
  • 1816E03HB
  • 1816E04HB
  • 1816E06HB
  • 1816E07HB
  • 1816E13HB
They all have an expiration date of June 2020.

Evanger's says because it primarily manufactures canned foods, its products would not have any rendered materials in the supply chain.

Evanger's received only one report of illness, but continues to investigate the contamination.

The company, which has not issued a recall in 82 years of business, has severed ties with the beef supplier that provided the contaminated goods.

The affected products were sold in Washington, California, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Evanger's urges customers who still have cans with the aforementioned lot numbers to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Those with questions may contact the company at 1-847-537-0102.
